What is Meursault like?

It seems like throughout the book Meursault remarks on the most mundane details--the weather, running to catch the bus--with the same emotion he reports his mother's death or the woman being beaten in his apartment building. What do you make of this? What is Meursault like?

I think Meursault is  detached from the world around him. Events that would be very significant for most people, such as a marriage proposal or a parent’s death, do not matter to him, at least not on a sentimental level. He simply does not care that his mother is dead, or that Marie loves him. Meursault is also honest, which means that he does not think of hiding his lack of feeling by shedding false tears over his mother’s death. However i think some people might fake their feelings that they care or love someone. From Meursault i also think he is a heartless and careless person that only care about his self and not others. In addition he simply does not make the distinction between good and bad in his own mind. When Raymond asks him to write a letter that will help Raymond torment his mistress, Meursault carelessly agrees because he didn’t have any reason not to. He does not place any value judgment on his act, and writes the letter mainly because he has the time and the ability to do so.
