The Stranger By Alberto Camus Reaction

Rereading those few pages, I got a feeling that while he does care about his mother and her death, the impact doesn't really occur to him because to him "life hasn't really changed". He spent his Sunday observing the people around him from a distance, his observations seem to be that of vague passing by thoughts which makes me think Meursault keeps himself at a distance from people, keeping his thoughts to himself. He often remarks to himself that he shouldn't say things he thinks because they aren't "socially appropriate". He seems to state things in an almost clinical way, from his mother's death to the woman getting abused, he carefully removes emotions from the equation. I believe this is coping mechanism, he disassociates and isolates himself. He lives life on autopilot.
