The theme of forgiveness is in the book Picking Cotton constantly and its something we as human beings deal with constantly in our lives. Forgiveness, is something we as humans find difficult to do based on the events we have passed. Forgiveness for Ronald Cotton is extremely important, because he wants to be able to have his name clean and clear off out of every bad circumstance he faced especially during the rape. He paid 11 years for a crime he stood his ground for being innocent and he had always been innocent every single time he said he didn't do the crime he committed. Forgiveness is a way for Ronald to be let free of everything that has been holding him back to be able to start a new chapter in his life after finally being proven innocent. Its important for Jennifer to be able to forgive Ronald so she can have the peace she has always wanted to find after such as horrible event. Forgiveness in many ways is a way to heal and close a chapter that him and Jennifer both lived. its a way for living freely with no holding down being held upon someone who is innocent. With justice, An "I'm sorry I was wrong." wont fix all the time he lost while being behind bars but its a way to show that with time justice will prevail. the theme overlaps with our class theme of why me because we all face events that mark us and help us heal with time although time doesn't really cure everything but being able to accept the fact that its a event or a time period that occurred has truly made us see that Why me has a purpose. Jennifer always had the question Why me? but so did Ronald after he was wrongfully convicted a crime he did not commit. My thought of forgiveness havent changed I believe that it takes time to forgive someone who really didn't commit a crime and is proven innocent all because its not easy because your life was marked and it can never change.
