Why is the inscription from the statue posted in between the prologue and the first chapter? That inscription captures the theme of the book. It heightens a way of thinking, living, and being. People who are free can never be conquered. Jennifer's will to get through her situation with her rapist and move past other obstacles life threw at her. There are instances, moments rather when her will to keep positive is questioned such as with her rapist of course, her boyfriend, and judicial involvements.

Good response, Rocheny. But something else to think about: The inscription was meant to support the Confederates who were rebelling against the North, essentially fighting for their right to keep (black) slaves. Thinking of the inscription that way, how do you relate it to the story you're reading?

ReplyDeleteThe word confederates when split becomes the words con and federates. Both words have two different definitions. Con is ability to disagree and/or stalk. Federates can be tricky. Relative to the book in being perplexed with experienced emotions. Ronald forgiving and being trapped. Jennifer trapped to forgive.
