   Jennifer had to look at her attacker, so she can identify him and have a clear description to tell the cops when she could've called them at the minimal chance she had to be able to call and dial 911.  she couldn't close her eyes and wait until the rape was over with, she needed to be able to fight the fact that she was being raped by someone who she had no idea who he was, she needed  to forget about that for a little bit, to be able to have a clear image of what her attacker looked like, so he could get incarcerated.   We as readers, can only bear and imagine so much of these horrible events that go on, but in particular this event, this rape that occured to Jennifer. To some readers, they may feel the pain Jennifer felt, when remembering this horrible event.  For some readers its a horrible thing to imagine, but for others, its an event that they don't want to even read about because its discouraging and horrible.  The main reason for this scene of the rape, being told in such detail little by little is so that the readers can visualize what Jennifer actually went through every moment when that was occuring.  The reason this scene was told into such detail is because Jennifer wants the readers to see and her part of her story and feel what she had gone through, as to just saying "I,was Raped." Jennifer wanted to give every detail about and event that marked her life.  "I can see him hold me with a knife and him taking off, pulling off my underware."  When this happened to her she felt disgusted, and honestly, the majority of us did while reading it.   She described with detail everything Ronald was doing to her and how she followed his lead to not get killed and be able to call the cops.  For someone to tell readers, publicly everything that she went through is very brave, because she's telling her story and many people can relate to it, so that those people who have experienced events or similar events close to these, they can be brave and not be afraid to go get help, to tell someone.  To feel trust in their family because maybe their family is not like Jennifer's. Maybe the readers can find a better support system, and get help to forget and try to continue to live their lives after such horrifying event.  Maybe when reading this scene of the rape and the book in general, readers and other people can get the lesson that there is a good support system out there, there are people who will care and help you pass this event, unlike Jennifer's family who didn't help her overcome this event but they didn't really have a close relationship with them except for her sister..
