Richard III as an Anti-hero
Like we discussed last week, Richard is one of the earliest anti-heroes in English lit. He lies, he manipulates, he murders and creates chaos. He's even physically repulsive. Why is he so compelling? Arguably, he is the most interesting character in the play, way more interesting than the blandly good Richmond who kills him in the end. What makes him interesting? Do you root for him? Why? What modern anti-heroes from lit, TV or film does he remind you of and why?

ReplyDeleteWhat make Richard interesting in this modern era is the fact that he is different, his actions and disposition is unlike what would be considered "normal". In the play Richard is without a doubt the sliest, sneakiest and most persuasive speaker in the play. These traits help to make him more "appealing" which is odd because he is the villein of the story.
ReplyDeleteWhile i don't necessarily side with Richard, I do believe that without his character the story would be too bland. His ability to deceive and con makes it hard to not appreciate him as a "Mater mind"

ReplyDeleteWhat makes Richard so interesting is that he is such a brat and he does stuff mind blows many people. I do not root for him because he is not an anti-hero. My definition of an anti-hero is someone who does good but the wrong way. For example The Punisher he used to take bad guys off the street but he would kill them. i believe Richard is just straight up a villain cause he is doing everything for his own good like a villain would do. there are many modern anti-hero but non like Richard because Richard is a villain
ReplyDeleteWhat makes Richard so completing he is doing all this unreal, almost out-of-the-norm things in the position he is in. Everything single he is doing this, you are wondering " what crazy act is he going to do next?". As he does every single act at times he brings it to a another level. I think was makes him so interesting is that he thinks of all these different ways to kill, lie and betray his way to the throne. Then later, makes sure he never gets caught or makes up different ways to put the blame on someone else. In a way he covers his tracks every step along the way to the throne. I have mixed feelings about Richard because he has these different ways of getting to the throne, I'm supporting him to get there but then also I want him to get caught and face the consequences for his action against another...

In the movie he kills these people in different styles and each style is more twisted and crazy then the next. As you are looking on, its like you can't watch but you still want to see what he is going to do next. Even though he is asked to be this hero by the X-Men, he wants to do what he wants to do.

DeleteThe thing that makes Richard interesting is that he does things that we can't do in real life but sometimes we want to do. For example like killing people. Sometimes people like to read like me the bad side or the villain of the story. To me that is more interesting.
ReplyDeleteWalter White is a character of a TV show called "Breaking Bad". He is very similar to Richard. Walter is the main character in the show. He gets rich by selling Methamphetamine. Also he kills in the show.
ReplyDeleteWhat makes Richard so compelling is the fact that he is sneaky. As readers we have a insight on the other characters. He is so interesting because we as readers know the type of person he is and how he thinks/acts. He puts on his act like he is uncaring about the throne but we know thats a lie. Its fun to see how he is going to make his mastermind plan come through. He puts his ideas into other peoples head and make them do his dirty work while he sits on the sideline acting oblivious. Do i root for him? I cant really say, but he is determined and I think that is a good trait for anybody who wants to get something done. if I had to compare to a modern day Anti-Hero I would say he is like Loki From Thor/Avengers Series. Like Loki he craves power that comes from being king and also like Loki he uses outside forces to do his dirty work w.o making his actions implicating to him in the long run
ReplyDeleteI want Richard III to win because I want to see what he does after gets the throne, like will he try to make the country a better or will he lead it towards destruction. What makes him interesting for me is how far he would go to be king and also how he devises plans that will help him get there. I'm pretty sure that if he had to kill everyone in order to be king he would do it without a second thought.
ReplyDeleteRichard III is the protagonist of this play and hes an anti-hero. In modern film a great a example of an anti-hero is the fictional character Deadpool. Richard III wants to take over the throne so he creates problems for the other characters and also murders. Deadpool is a mercenary that kills bad people.
